The winter months are slowly creeping in! We here in Devon haven’t seen any snow yet, but when it comes, we know it will present difficulties in all kinds of ways. This time of year always seems to do that, particularly in a country that always seems to be caught off guard by weather changes.
Before long, the roads will be covered in ice or possible snow and cars will be struggling on the roads of the South West.
However Vehicles losing control on icy roads, is actually quite easily preventable – at least, it is if you’re willing to make the proper preparations.
Countries like Sweden and Finland seem to be able to deal with a couple of feet of snow without too much trouble. They’re not made of stronger stuff than us, and nor do they necessarily have more powerful cars. But what they do do is just make better preparations – by, for example, keeping their winter tyres on for nearly six months of the year.
We might not have the same need for winter or snow tyres in April that our Finnish friends do, but this situation demonstrates the need for your car to be properly outfitted whenever there’s snow on the ground.
Another peril to watch out for in the colder months is salt and grit on the road.
That’s right – the grit that councils lay on the road to keep you in one piece can actually cause damage to your car.
Admittedly, it makes you less likely to swerve, but when grit is thrown up under the wheels of the car in front of you, it can cause scrapes and scratches to your alloys.
There might not be a huge amount you can do about this. What you can do, is be sure to keep your distance from vehicles, particularly trucks, in front. Of course, this is good practice anyway when driving in adverse weather conditions for safety.
Before the weather gets too bad – that means now – you should take a good look at your alloy wheels and check for damage or marks. Then, take the opportunity to have the alloys refurbished.
Part of you might think ‘what a waste’ – after all, if you can expect damage to your alloy wheels over the winter anyway, why bother refurbing now?
BUT scuffs and scratches that you can see now could develop a lot more between now and spring, and cause real damage that can compromise safety – or at least, make it harder to repair the wheel in a few months.
